Dougherty Field rebuilding Project

September 28, 2026
Hi neighbors,
Tatyana Vashchenko, project manager at the City Parks Dept, has just provided an update on the Dougherty Field rebuild project. As a quick recap, the goal of the project is to bury the contaminated soil that was removed as part of the REC pool project as well as work at Fitzpatrick Stadium beneath a membrane, add clean soil with an irrigation system, resulting in a level and well drained irrigated play surface.
The update from staff indicates that the City has been dealing with challenges securing a contractor to work on the project, which has unfortunately led to the piles of contaminated soil left in place for longer than expected, creating frustration and concern on the part of the neighborhood. As of right now, it does sound like there has been some progress on potentially securing a contractor, and that a contract may be in place soon. Staff have indicated that a contractor is available and working on negotiations to advance the soil capping portion of the project before the end of this calendar year. Additional work on the athletic field improvements will likely take place in the spring when the soil is workable again.

It sounds like further updates will be forthcoming, and we'll look forward to hearing them from the City.
